Tips to Make the Most of Your Massage

Americans are becoming more focused on holistic treatment, which is fueling demand for massage therapy. According to the American Massage Therapy Association, over 50 million Americans received a massage in July 2013. Research on the health benefits of massage therapy appears to be driving demand. Consumers that are interested in massage therapy should learn what steps to take to make the most of the treatment.

Benefiting from Massage Therapy

Massage therapy can be highly beneficial, but there are a number of things that you need to do to make the most of it. Here are some things that you can do to make the most of massage therapy.
Stay Receptive
You will get the most of a massage if you are able to stay as relaxed and receptive as possible. It can be a little awkward allowing a stranger to manipulate your body, but they will be able to help remove tension and release endorphins more easily if you go with the flow.
Communicate with Your Massage Therapist
You need to communicate closely with your masseuse to get the most from your treatment. Here are some things that you will want to communicate with them:
  • Any health problems that could create problems with treatment (these should be addressed during the intake evaluation)
  • The problem areas that you want to focus on
  • Any discomfort that you experience during treatment
Massage therapists need to understand your goals and physical sensations to ensure they offer the highest quality of treatment. Open communication is necessary to reach these goals.
Avoid Wearing Thick Clothing
Lighter clothing makes it easier for your masseuse to stimulate your muscles. Try to wear a thin shirt and sweatpants for a Swedish massage. If you are receiving a deeper tissue massage, then you should consider taking off more clothing. Many massage therapists recommend their patients be fully or mostly nude.
Do Not Eat a Large Meal Immediately Before
It is a good idea to schedule your massage at least a couple of hours after you plan on eating. You will be more relaxed if your body has had time to digest. Eating also spikes your glucose levels, which can make it more difficult to relax.
Let the Masseuse Do the Work
Many people with Type A personalities want to be proactive about their own treatment. You will need to resist the urge and allow the masseuse to do the work for you. Do not lift your head or limbs to make their job easier. They will provide a great massage, so just relax.
