Camera Critters: Butterflies

I  really love butterflies. I'm sure most people do.

This summer the lake at the campground had so many butterflies. Anyone know what attracts the butterflies to the beach/sand?

At some points there was at least 20-30 butterflies hanging out together on the sand.

Well here is some pics & a video I took.

  2. Butterflies gather on wet areas to extract minerals from the dampness, much like they collect nectar from a flower. This is called "puddling". Swallowtails seem to do it most.
    Nice shots!

  7. I've never heard the term for it, but I always thought it was because they were getting moisture or some form of nutrients from the wet soil. I've even seen them do this on pieces of old Styrofoam laying around close to a boat dock.

  8. No way! I love butterflies. They are so pretty and it's so rare to see them around here unless it's at a butterfly habitat or something like that.
