Aloha Friday/Friday Follow

An Island Life hosts this meme. Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

We have for some unknown reason been contemplating getting a dog. We have a house & a nice fenced in back yard for one. Right now we don't have any other pets. We have like zero experience with dogs. I always grew up with cats. My kids (especially my daughter) all of a sudden wants a dog. We kind of want a smaller breed.

My Question:   So my question is - do you think we should get a dog? What kind? Where can I get one for a good price? Do you think getting one on Craigslist is a good idea?

Any comments, advice, etc. appreciated. Thanks.

  2. We adopted both our poodles. We had to have poodles because hubby has allergies. The first poodle we adopted from a woman who could care for him no longer...we had him for 15 years! The second was adopted from a poodle rescue league and we only had him for a year when he was hit by a car. We don't plan on adopting again, but if we did, we'd go through the MSPCA or a rescue league.

  3. Stopping by from Aloha Fridays! IF we ever decided to get another dog, I would save my money for a soft-coated Wheaton terrier - they're wonderful (expensive too!) they love children and they don't shed! If I didn't save enough $$ for that, then, of course, would use SPCA or other local rescue league also!

  4. I wouldn't be without my dog, but before deciding You need to make sure you will have enough time to wlk it and look after it. Adopting pets from shelters is always good, there are so many unwanted animals out there looking for someone to love them!

  5. I'd go the the humane society and do some online research into rescue shelters etc first. I'm a dog lover myself. Got one from a breeder and one from the humane society.

    Have a great weekend!

  6. I would not personally get a dog because I do not want something else that requires a lot of care. With that said, if I was getting a dog, I would go to a shelter. My AF: http://www.rundpinne.com/2010/04/aloha-friday-2-april.html

  7. I'm sure that you already know - dogs are like children. They need love, attention and to be taught.
Unfortunately, at the time, Joshua & I are having to get rid of our puppy because we just don't have enough time.

Craigslist is perfectly fine, you can find cheap (free) animals on there; you can also look into going to a shelter.

    :)

    Goodluck!! :)

  8. We have a cat. I don't think I could have a dog. Two kids are enough for me! Stopping by from Friday Follow. Thanks for the follow on my blog. I can't wait to read more from you!!

  9. We adopted our dog from our local animal shelter. He is so loyal and obedient! I would go that way. And I prefer medium sized dogs since smaller ones annoy me with their high pitched bark LOL

  10. Thanks for stopping by my blog! I recommend going to an animal shelter or humane society! The animals there seem thankful when they are adopted. I saved my dog from a busy road and then later adopted him from the shelter I took him to because no one claimed him. He's an awesome dog also! I have a schnauzer dog that is small and doesn't shed. He has to be groomed though every 3 months.
Good luck on your dog search! I'm sure you'll find the perfect one!

  11. At first I would say NO avoid the dog. They can be such destroyers. We have 3 of them.

On the other hand I would go to a shelter because those dogs are already spayed or neutered. It's a big job to have a dog. It's like having another kid. Just be prepared! They need a lot attention. lol

  12. My thought on getting a dog is #1 as long as everyone is ok with getting a dog. If your spouse doesn't want a dog and you get it, it doesn't go over well. Its sort of like surprising your spouse with a kid (I said sort of). I say that because there is a lot of time and care that goes into owning a dog. As for where to get the dog I would say the best place would be the humane society to adopt a dog.

  14. I'm not a dog person, so I would say it's never OK to get a dog. I'll be nice though...Take the time to learn about dogs and various breeds. Decide as parents if it's a good idea to get a dog, then discuss it with your children. Recognize that taking care of the dog will end up being your responsibility no matter what the children say. I'd go with a shelter because there's so many unwanted animals.

  15. We usually get our pets from the Humane Soceity but they usually don't have pure breeds there unless you're lucky.

  16. Thank you for stopping by my blog, I'm returning the follow. As far as getting a dog I don't think you'll regret. I had a black lab for 16 yrs. We loved her immensely. We got her at the Dog Shelter in our community. I only paid $10, and I believe it was $20 for a license. She was the best dog I ever had. I went there in mind to get a barker when she heard a noise & she did all that & more. She also protected us. I would get a protector.

  17. Thanks for hoping over to my blog from Friday Follow, I am already following you:)

And of course you should get a dog. I recommend a Lab if you are going for a bigger dog or a Cocker Spaniel if you are going for a smaller dog. I am a little partial:)

  18. We do not have any pets because of allergies. I grew up with birds sine I am highly allergic to cats and most dogs. Owning a dog is a huge responsibility. I know that we may think about it one day when we have a larger house. My fear are vet bills, cost of special foods (know a lot of people who's dogs can not eat regular food), grooming, and who to care for the dog when we go away. Good luck with your decision.

  19. My husband hunts and we've had a chocolate lab and a black lab. Both are FANTASTIC with kids. We got the last one from a local breeder, and before that, we got the choc lab from an ad in the paper.

  20. I have a dog. Who I love very much! But I would say that only you can decide that you should have a dog. A dog is a pain at times. They need to be taken care of. They need someone at all times. If you go away you have to have someone take care of the dog. They are MUCH harder than cats. :)

  22. I would think long and hard before getting one on Craigs list.

  23. I wouldn't get one on craigslist but I'd visit an animal shelter close to me and talk with them about the animal and it's behaviour etc.

Sometimes just talking to them about your family, they can recommend a good one.

  24. Happy belated Friday Follow and Aloha Friday!

As to the dog question, we've never had a dog and so I'm not much help there. To us, the hassle of training and costs of upkeep would be too much right now.
