Book Review: They're Your Parents Too! by Francine Russo

I was recently sent the book, "They're Your Parents Too!" by Francine Russo to read and review. The book also has a byline after the title, "How Siblings Can Survive Their Parents' Aging Without Driving Each Other Crazy."

Information on book:

Adult siblings are fighting, simmering, and even suing each other over caring for their aging parents. Francine Russo's new groundbreaking book, "They're Your Parents Too!:How Siblings Can Survive Their Parents' Aging Without Driving Each Other Crazy." (Bantam; February 2010) was written by a journalist who has her finger on the pulse of the latest trends in family issues. Russo defines a new stage of life, the twilight transition, that will prove critical for the baby boomer generation and those to follow.

By: Francine Russo

ISBN-10: 0553806998

ISBN-13: 978-0553806991

Publication date: January 27, 2010

Category: Parenting/Family

ARP: $26.00

My take on the book:

This book is a valuable resource for anyone who is dealing with caring for an aging parent(s). Reading this book put some things in perspective for me. Things that I have not put much thought into. But probably should. Because my mother and especially my mother-in-law are getting up in years.

I learned reading, "They're Your Parents Too!," that this generation of adult children are dramatically different from those in previous generations. In the past who would take care of aging parents was pretty much a given - it was usually the daughters in the family. But now with a generation of working women that is not the case. Also with better educated adults it has lead to people moving further away (for jobs, etc.,) from their parents then in the past.

Also there are people having children later. So they are still raising their own kids when their parents start to need care. Another factor in today's society that has made care giving of our parents different is just the simple fact that people are living longer then ever before. So there is more likelihood parents are going to need care at some point.

"They're Your Parents Too!" covers everything from acknowledging your parents aging to avoiding distrust and power struggles when one sibling has been given financial authority. The book also covers reconciling with siblings and distilling tensions that may still simmer after parents die. These are just a few of the topics one can gain knowledge from in the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is facing decisions with caring for their aging parents. Or anyone for that matter, because it is never to early to start planning for this.

Disclaimer: I received a complementary copy of "They're Your Parents Too!" by Francine Russo for the sole purpose of reviewing the book. Receiving a complementary copy of the book in no way affected my review. I received no monetary compensation.

Aloha Friday #21/Friday Follow #7

ALOHA FRIDAY

An Island Life hosts this meme. Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

My Question: Have you seen any good movies lately?

My Answer: The last movie my husband and I rented was, "Burn After Reading." I do not recommend it. It was horrible, in my opinion anyway.

Today I am taking the kids to see, "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief." I hope we like it.

Not Your Mother's Skin Care Products

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Dermajuv Skin Care Products. All opinions are 100% mine.

Dermajuv_skin_care_products

No on in my family takes care of their skin. I think my Grandmother did somewhat. I remember she used to wash her face with old fashioned "cold cream." I remember how thick it was and I always thought it smelled awful.

I know my mother and my sisters don't even wash their faces at night! They were a lot of makeup and don't even wash it off at night. I don't even wear make up everyday, but I still wash my face.

I know other skin care products that the older generations in my family never used. One of them is wrinkle cream. Maybe because it just wasn't available back then. Now there are more products available. And I really want to start looking into some. I have noticed some wrinkles around my eyes. And I really want to start taking some preventative measures towards them.

I found some great products called Dermajuv. There are ingredients in their products that are now coming out in modern skin care companies. One such ingredient is called Matrixyl. What Matrixyl does is work at the DNA Level to stimulate the very factors in the skin which we lose as we grow old. We lose Collagen and Fibronectin. The loss of collagen is what leads to thinning skin and the wrinkling that we associate with aging skin.

I think everyone should really take advantage of the advances in skin care products. I am hoping I will be able too.

The Olympics

I have been really getting into the Olympics. I watch like every second it is on. I was watching the Giant Slalom and really didn't like how they handled that.

I was angry that they stopped Julia Mancuso after Lindsey Vonn crashed. It really wasn't fair. Now Mancuso is in 18th place after that.

I read some are saying the Olympics are a popularity contest. It seems like that. Mancuso is doing a lot better at the Olympics, but they give Vonn all the media. I don't agree with it. Just saying.

WellnessDaily: A Great Online Resource

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of wellnessdaily.com. All opinions are 100% mine.

I just found a great website. It is called WellnessDaily and it is located at: www.wellnessdaily.com. On this site there are many resources available on health and wellness. Visit the website and be one of the first 25,000 to claim a $5 product rebate.

I am really going to look more into this website for myself. If you recall from one of my previous posts, I was trying to find a new workout routine. Especially for the winter month, because I love walking but it is hard to do in the winter weather. So I tried Yoga, but I don't know if that is really for me or not. I still may look into that. But I really want to try to find another workout routine.

It is hard to find an online source for all things to do with wellness. But just looking at the website WellnessDaily, I just saw a whole lot of different articles on staying fit. And some workout suggestions. Like an article called "Cross-Training for Fun and Fitness." I really want to read this article later when I get some more time. The site has a lot of great information all in one place. There is also information on eating right, losing weight, and even recipes and a lot more too.

There is also a contest going on right now. If you sign up now on wellnessdaily.com you can enter a Twitter contest they are having. You could win a prize package that includes coupons for a year-long supply of Jennie-O Turkey Store product and a one-year gym membership, valued at $1,250. Here is a Tweet you can use: "Enter to win $ towards a gym membership & JENNIE-O turkey products. Just follow @wellness_daily & RT this. http://bit.ly/tbd123"

WW #96 "Happy 10th Birthday"

This Sunday is my daughter's 10th Birthday! I can't believe it.

She had two parties already. One with her friends, on Saturday. Which we had at Michael's Craft Store. The kids painted some t-shirts.

daughter's birthday

Then we had a family party on Sunday. We did all this early mostly because they are on school vacation this week so it was easier. And because then we went to the American Girl doll store in Massachusetts on Monday, with the money she received from people. Let's just say she bought a lot at the store! I didn't get pictures at the store, because I felt weird doing that. But the store is really cool.

Book Review: Feddie Girl by Nona David

I was recently sent the book "Feddie Girl" by Nona David to review. Below is information from the publisher.

From Bernard Books Publishing:

FEDDIE GIRL is an international adventure/thriller about the experiences of an American teenager in a Nigerian (West Africa) boarding school. This novel offers a unique reading experience--witty, fun, and exhilarating. The masterful suspense, action, and sub-plot will curl your toes, keep you reading all night, and leave you thirsting for more.

Author: Nona David
Publication Date: February 2010
Copyright: July 2009
Type: US Trade Paperback
Page No: 400
Price: $19.99 (US); £14.05 (UK); $26.10 (CAN); €18.82 (EUR); $28.80 (AUS); N2500 (NGN)
ISBN: 978-0-9824526-0-8
SAN: 858-2041

My take on the book:

The book is about a thirteen year old girl named Carlotta, who because of some bad behavior in school, is sent to a boarding school. Her parents send her to a Nigerian Federal School.

Carlotta later realizes that "Feddie Girl" is a nickname used by the students to indicate girls of mixed race and non-Nigerian students.

The author writes with such clarity that you feel as if you are there with them, and you know how Carlotta feels as a teen trying to adapt to living in a boarding school in another country.

Boarding school life is something that takes some getting used to Carlotta soon finds. Carlotta had always depended on her mother for everything. She had never bothered to do her own laundry, do dishes, tidy her own room. She had left everything to her parents. She soon finds out that life is different in a boarding school.

As if the school rules, regulations, rising bells and other ways of dormitory life weren't enough, author Nona David takes Carlotta's story a step further. You find out through a sub-plot another reason her parents sent her to the boarding school.

I don't want to give to much away, but it leads her family to infidelity and the clutches of organized crime.

I would recommend "Feddie Girl" from teens to adults, who like good fiction. This is a very exciting book, and was very interesting. When her mother drops her off at the boarding school she tells her that if she does well after one year she can return home. Carlotta realized very early into her boarding school stay that when one mistake is made the consequences can last for a long time. She chose to work hard so she could go back home at the end of the year.

WW #95 "Father/Daughter Dance"

Last Wednesday, my daughter's school had a Father/Daughter Dance. It was the first time the school has ever had one.

They called it the "Butterfly Kisses Dance." Each girl received a flower and they took a keepsake photo of the Fathers and Daughters there. They also had desserts and drinks, and lots of dancing. They both really had a great time at the dance!

We will get the photo they took there in about 2 weeks. Here's some pictures I took of them before they left for the dance.

Get Quality Eyeglasses for Less

I was just reading an article on Examiner.com. It was a review by Eric Hammer of the Brooklyn Liberal Examiner.

In his review he talks about where he buys his eyeglasses. And what he reveals in his article is that for the past eight years he has bought his eyeglasses from Zenni Optical.

Often when you need new eyeglasses you do what most people do go to the optometrist. And those glasses can be really expensive, right? You can spend at least a hundred dollars or more on eyeglasses. Well, in the article I just read, I found out that you can get a pair of eyeglasses from Zenni Optical starting at as little as $8.00!

You may be wondering how they can offer these glasses at such a cheap price. Well that is because they have no middlemen, no retail overhead and practically no advertising budget. They just have fashionable and stylish products.

The article suggests you get your PD (pupilary distance) number from your doctor. But once you know that you can order your glasses. Also, the glasses come quickly but not as quickly as you would get them from a doctor. But if you are ordering glasses ahead a time then that should be no problem. Glasses from Zenni Optical, are well worth it. Eyeglasses for most people are a health item of necessity. If you have glasses then you need them. So getting them at the best price is really worth looking into.

Check out Zenni Optical for all your eyeglasses needs.

Aloha Friday/Follow Friday

An Island Life hosts this meme. Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

My Question: Which of the guys below do you dig? (from each group A or B)

90210

A. Brandon (Jason Priestly)
Photobucket

Or

B. Dillon (Luke Perry)

Photobucket

Good Will Hunting

A. Matt Damon

Or

B. Ben Affleck

Ocean's Eleven

A. Brad Pitt
Photobucket

Or

B. George Clooney
Photobucket

Grey's Anatomy

A. McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey)
Photobucket

Or

B. McSteamy (Eric Dane)
Photobucket

My answer: I've always had a thing for the "good guy" I guess. When all my friends were going for Dillon on 90210. I loved Brandon. I dig Matt Damon over Ben Affleck, I would go for McDreamy over McSteamy. The only one that might be considered a "good guy" that, I don't like is Brad Pitt. I would go for George Clooney over him any day.

WW #94 - "Tri-Ominos"

For the 1st time since doing "Wordless Wednesday" I really can not come up with anything. (or anything to exciting, I guess.) I could post an old picture I suppose. But nothing currently is going on. My weekend basically consisted of going to the car wash and playing "board games."

My family really likes games. So I remembered a game I used to play called Tri-ominos. I love this game. So I went out Saturday to try to find it. Unbelievably I found it at the first store I went to, which was Toys R Us!

I was so excited. I then made everyone play it. It is a really cool game. And I may like it more then anyone else. But that's because this is one game I can actually beat them at.

International Federation of Snowball Throwing Giveaway

I don't know about you but I just love the Olympics! I can not wait until Friday's Opening Ceremonies.

And I just found out about another fun way to celebrate the Olympics. And that is with a fun blog run by Coca-Cola. It is the International Federation of Snowball Throwing.

Coca-Cola is running an online parody campaign called the ‘International Federation of Snowball Throwing’ designed to generate excitement for the upcoming Olympics and promote TCCC’s Olympic sponsorship in an unexpected way. The “IFST” campaign is built around their global television commercial called “Snowball” which features representatives from different countries participating in a spontaneous snowball fight.

As part of the program, Coca-Cola created a fictional governing body called the International Federation of Snowball Throwing and hired an actor to serve as the IFST President.

The IFST is an “organization” created to rally support from citizens of the world who love throwing snowballs and want to see snowball throwing added to the Olympics. The IFST supports snowball throwing in various forms, including individual accuracy competitions, team events and even competitions with ‘fake’ snow. Any competition involving a handmade ball made of soft, crystallized precipitation is recognized as an official sport by the International Federation of Snowball Throwing. Skill levels ranging from world-class athletes to anyone who loves to throw things are welcome.

While visiting the International Federation of Snowball Throwing why not sign the petition to get snowball throwing recognized as an official sport.

Win IT: Three (3) lucky winners will each receive an International Federation of Snowball Throwing T-Shirt and a 2008 Collector's Edition Coca-Cola Bottle Set from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Cryo-Cell Helps Haiti

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Cryo-Cell International. All opinions are 100% mine.

The tragedy in Haiti is so devastating. Every time I watch the news I feel so saddened by what is happening there. When ever they show a child whose orphaned now I want to cry. Or when they show the starkness of the medical conditions down there, it just breaks my heart.

Many have come forward in ways to help Haiti. Now another company is helping too. And that is Cryo-Cell. They are donating 25 dollars from each enrollment to the “Save the Children: Haiti Relief Fund." They are doing this throughout the month of February.

Cryo-Cell is a cord blood bank. They will bank your cord blood or umbilical cord blood. This is blood that remains in the the umbilical cord and placenta at the time of birth. Typically this has been discarded and thrown away in the past. But scientists have found that this is a rich source for stem cells. And has been a substitute for bone marrow and has had great success in thousands of transplants.

These cells that are taken from your baby's cord blood are obviously a perfect match for baby. These cells are perfect throughout his or her lifetime. For example if your child contracts a disease which must be treated with chemotherapy or radiation, there is a probability of a negative impact on the immune system. While an autologous (self) transplant may not be appropriate for every disease, there could be a benefit in using the preserved U-Cord stem cells to bolster and repopulate your child’s blood and immune system as a result of complications from other treatments.

For more information and to enroll now visit Cryo-Cell's website. There you can learn more about stem cell research and Cryo-Cell. And please consider enrolling this month, because they will donate $25.00 to help Haiti.

Wordless/Wordful Wednesday #93

Here are a few more pictures from my recent trip to my in-laws. Here is the kids with their uncle. He's kinda a goof ball.

herby

And here is my mother-in-law, sister-in-law, me and my husband. My in-laws were big into taking pictures that day. They wanted a picture of everyone. I kept telling them I don't like how I come out in pictures. And don't want my picture taken.

My SIL then gave me a big speech about her friend. They did a lot of traveling together. And everywhere they went, her friend would not want to be in any of the pictures. Her friend died suddenly a few years ago. And when she looks back at all those places they traveled together, there is not one of her friend in them. She does not have any pictures of her friend!

I finally agreed to have my picture taken. And I'm actually kinda happy how it came out.
