Kids And The Internet

Figures! Now that I am without a computer at home. My daughter has two different projects, in which the Internet would come in handy. Up until now she hasn't really had any projects that really require a computer.

The first one is for a school project on careers. She has to pick a career she thinks she will want and then find some information on it. Then she will have to do a poster on it too. She picked fashion designer. Which I got a kick out of. She wants to be a fashion designer?

The second project is for her Brownie troop. She has to find out information on a woman pioneer. She want to do Amelia Earhart? (not sure if that's correct spelling.)

She wants to look up this info online. When I suggested to her since we have to go to the library anyway to use the computers we could just get some books on these subjects. She said no. She wants to look it up on the Internet. I tried to explain to her that believe it or not books are actually better and you would probably get better information from a book. She said it has to be from the Internet.

That's how much kids are programmed now by computers. Remember not to long ago when all information came from books? It's actually, I think, kind of sad how much we are relying on computers.

  1. Do kids even know what a book is these days?

I had one tell me they had never heard of the phone book or yellow pages. They look that info up online instead.

    Yup.

  2. That is funny and sounds just like my house. My nine year old wants to be a fashion designer too. I showed her what an actual encyclopedia looked like and she laughed at me!

  3. Sue,

The art of reading Books is slowly but surely being annihilated by Computers. What more with pocket sized Computers now making its market niche?

Frankly (although regrettably for Books per se) the Computer and the Internet delivers information needed at such great speed and ease. That makes it irreplaceably attractive for the young as well as adults. So, in a way, I can understand why you lovely daughter is adamant about wishing that her project is done with the aid of a Computer.

Gone are the days when one would speak to the bus driver when paying one's busfare, having small talk when buying a can of Coke and speaking to the Bank clerk. It's all about automation and speed going from henceforth.

Even small talk while in the kitchen while washing the dishes is usurped by the auto dish washer.

    LOL!

  4. That is something else. I agree with you completely. I remember when I was a kid (pre-internet days) if we had to write a report we went to the library and checked out some books on the topic. Boy, times sure have changed. Wish your daughter good luck on her projects!

  5. I haven't been blog hopping too much lately. Had no idea about your computer drama. I hope you get the new one soon. I'm sure your daughter will get her projects done nicely, with or with out the internet :)
