Spilt Pea Soup


My mother had a party last week. She served spiral ham as one of the dishes. I was lucky enough to get the left over ham and ham bone! I immediately thought of making Split Pea Soup, which I haven't made in years. Due to the fact that a whole ham can be pretty expensive.

I know what your thinking, "Split Pea Soup, it looks gross, yuck, etc." Or it reminds me of The Exorcist when Linda Blair spews Split Pea Soup all over the place! But Split Pea Soup has a bad rap, and is actually delicious!

So if you're lucky enough to get hold of a ham and ham bone, think of making Split Pea Soup. I cooked it in my crock pot! Which I dug out, after not using for a long time. (This inspired me to start using it again more.)

Ingredients:

1 ham bone with lots of meat left on it
1 pkg. dried green split peas (1 lb)
1 onion (chopped)
carrots (I cheated and used some frozen baby carrots - about a handful)
1 chicken bullion cube
2 quarts water
salt & pepper to taste

Preparation:

It's pretty easy. You just throw everything in the crock pot. Cook on low for 8-10 hrs. Or on high for about 5-6 hrs. I cooked it on high. Cook until peas are very soft and ham falls off bone. Remove bone - (you may have to cut some of the meat off the bone.)

Any left overs can be frozen too! Give it a try sometime. You'll be surprised how good it is!



(Also, on a different note, Happy Memorial Day! God Bless all who have served our Country and all who have lost a loved one that has served our Country. My father was a Korean War Veteran. He survived the war, but unfortunately died almost 15 years ago. I miss you Dad!)

  2. I knew peas is hard to cooked,but 5-6 hr? Can't we use the LAGOSTINA to save time? I like to cook green or red beans in sugar water then froze it for dinner dessert. But it cook wasted for long time. So I used to buy the cook-done one. Though it costs a lot,but save my time.

  5. Thanks all for your comments. Try out this recipe if you get a chance. You won't be disappointed. @Randy, it takes 5-6 hours in the crock pot, because it is a "slow" cooking process, which gives it good flavor. If you want to cook it faster you probably could cook it right on the stove top in a pot.
